In the beginning of Shintoism, the religion rested on the fact that it had no founder. Without a founder there is no ritual use of scriptures, and organized teachings. About 2500 years ago, the evidence of Shinto practices & rituals began to emerge. Shintoism was founded at the same time as Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Taoism & Confucianism.
Shinto coexisted with other religious movements. When China made it's way into Japan with their religions around 200 CE, Shintoism contains the positive aspects of both Taoism & Confucianism. When Buddhism arrived in Japan, Shinto adapted many of its doctrines. With the three faiths, eventually it led to problems where shinto appeared to have been absorbed into Buddhism. |
Shinto comes from the chinese term shin Tao, which means "the way of the divine". In japanese, the same characters are pronounced Kami no michi. They used to focus on the mythology and worship of nature. They use many gods (polytheistic), to express religious beliefs.
