Izanagi and Izanami are the two key deities, who are also brother and sister, and came down from the strips of the rainbow Floating Bridge of Heaven. The Japanese island was formed by a mythical formation, from Izanagi’s sword touching the sea. (Picture on left)
Izanagi went to the land of darkness to search for Izanami. He finally found Izanami hidden in the shadows. Izanami ate the food of the underworld and was sentenced to remain in there, that is why she was hidden in the shadows of the underworld so Izanagi wouldn't be able to find her yet he did. Izanagi begged the to release Izanami from the land of darkness. She agreed only if Izanagi promised not to look at her. Deep in the underworld Izanami was surrounded by ugly hags, and her maggot-infested body was in a process of rotting. Izanami became furious and chased Izanagi out of the land of darkness. Izanagi blocked the gateway back to earth with a rock so Izanami will not be able to escape.
